1. Summary

Chapter 9. The Proposal

The Proposal is a one-act humorous play written by the famous Russian dramatist Anton Chekhov. Originally titled A Marriage Proposal, the play is a farce that presents the funny behaviour of wealthy landowners. It shows how pride, greed, and unnecessary arguments can spoil even the happiest occasions. The play also highlights the importance of understanding and patience in human relationships.

Chapter Summary (English)

The play begins in the drawing room of Stepan Chubukov's house. Ivan Vassilevitch Lomov, a wealthy landowner and Chubukov's neighbour, visits him wearing formal clothes. Chubukov warmly welcomes Lomov but mistakenly believes that he has come to borrow money. To his surprise, Lomov reveals that he has come to ask for the hand of Chubukov's daughter, Natalya Stepanovna, in marriage. Chubukov happily accepts the proposal and goes to call his daughter. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

While waiting for Natalya, Lomov becomes extremely nervous. He talks about his poor health, saying that he suffers from palpitations, excitement, sleeplessness, and nervousness. He believes that marriage will bring stability and peace to his life. His anxious nature makes him worry about everything even before speaking to Natalya. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

When Natalya enters, the conversation begins politely. However, before Lomov can express his proposal properly, they start arguing over the ownership of a piece of land called Oxen Meadows. Both firmly claim that the land belongs to their family. The argument grows louder, and instead of discussing marriage, they become completely absorbed in proving themselves right. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}

Hearing their loud voices, Chubukov enters the room. Instead of calming them, he joins the argument and supports his daughter. Soon the three of them exchange harsh words and insults. The marriage proposal is forgotten as they continue quarrelling over the small piece of land. The first part of the play ends with the quarrel becoming more intense, creating a humorous situation for the audience. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}

Chapter Summary (Hindi /

कहानी की शुरुआत स्टेपान चुबुकोव के घर से होती है। उनका पड़ोसी और धनी जमींदार इवान लोमोव उनसे मिलने आता है। चुबुकोव पहले सोचते हैं कि लोमोव उनसे पैसे उधार लेने आया है, लेकिन लोमोव बताता है कि वह उनकी बेटी नताल्या स्टेपानोव्ना से विवाह का प्रस्ताव लेकर आया है। यह सुनकर चुबुकोव बहुत खुश हो जाते हैं और नताल्या को बुलाने चले जाते हैं। :contentReference[oaicite:4]{index=4}

नताल्या के आने तक लोमोव अपनी घबराहट और स्वास्थ्य संबंधी समस्याओं के बारे में सोचता रहता है। वह मानता है कि अब उसकी आयु विवाह की हो चुकी है और उसे एक शांत एवं नियमित जीवन की आवश्यकता है। वह अत्यधिक उत्तेजित और चिंतित स्वभाव का व्यक्ति है। :contentReference[oaicite:5]{index=5}

जब नताल्या आती है, तो दोनों सामान्य बातचीत करते हैं। लेकिन विवाह प्रस्ताव रखने से पहले ही दोनों ऑक्सन मीडोज़ नामक जमीन के स्वामित्व को लेकर बहस करने लगते हैं। दोनों अपने-अपने दावे को सही साबित करने में लग जाते हैं। यह बहस इतनी बढ़ जाती है कि विवाह का प्रस्ताव पूरी तरह भुला दिया जाता है। :contentReference[oaicite:6]{index=6}

शोर सुनकर चुबुकोव भी वहाँ पहुँचते हैं। वे झगड़ा शांत कराने के बजाय अपनी बेटी का पक्ष लेने लगते हैं। तीनों एक-दूसरे को अपशब्द कहने लगते हैं और स्थिति अत्यन्त हास्यास्पद बन जाती है। इसी प्रकार नाटक का पहला भाग समाप्त होता है। :contentReference[oaicite:7]{index=7}
