Madam Rides the Bus, written by Vallikkannan, is a heartwarming story about an eight-year-old village girl named Valli. Curious and determined, Valli dreams of taking a bus ride to the nearby town all by herself. Through careful planning, patience, and courage, she fulfills her dream. During the journey, she observes the outside world with great excitement and also learns an important lesson about life and death. The story highlights a child's innocence, curiosity, confidence, and growing understanding of the world.

Story Summary (English)

Valliammai, popularly called Valli, is an eight-year-old girl who lives in a small village. She has no friends of her age to play with, so her favourite pastime is standing at the front door of her house and watching the activities on the street. Among all the things she sees every day, the bus travelling between her village and the nearby town attracts her the most. Gradually, she develops a strong desire to travel on that bus at least once.

Valli patiently collects information about the bus journey by listening to conversations between the villagers and regular passengers. She learns that the town is six miles away, the journey takes forty-five minutes, and the fare is thirty paise for one side. Determined to make the journey, she carefully saves sixty paise by avoiding small pleasures such as buying toys, balloons, and peppermints. She also plans the perfect time for the trip while her mother takes an afternoon nap.

One afternoon, Valli boards the bus all by herself. The cheerful conductor jokingly calls her "Madam," which makes the other passengers laugh. At first, Valli feels shy, but she soon becomes comfortable. She enjoys every moment of the journey, admiring the beautiful green fields, canals, palm trees, distant hills, and the lively scenes along the road. The comfortable bus, the passing scenery, and the excitement of travelling alone fill her with happiness.

During the journey, Valli laughs heartily when she sees a young cow running playfully in front of the bus. After reaching the town, she refuses to get down because her only wish is to experience the bus ride. She immediately buys another ticket for the return journey. On the way back, however, she sees the same cow lying dead on the roadside after being hit by a speeding vehicle. The shocking sight deeply saddens her and changes her cheerful mood.

After returning home safely, Valli quietly enters her house without telling anyone about her adventure. While listening to a conversation between her mother and aunt about life and the world, she silently realises that people often know about many things but do not fully understand them. Her first bus journey not only fulfills her dream but also gives her a deeper understanding of life, experience, and reality.

Story Summary (Hindi /
