Question 1. Where is Coorg?

Answer:

Coorg, also known as Kodagu, is the smallest district of Karnataka. It is situated midway between Mysuru and the coastal town of Mangaluru. The region is famous for its evergreen forests, coffee plantations, pleasant climate, and scenic beauty.

Question 2. What is the story about the Kodavu people's descent?

Answer:

There are different theories about the origin of the Kodavu people. One theory suggests that they are of Greek descent because some of Alexander's soldiers settled in Coorg after his campaign. Another theory believes that they are of Arabic origin because of certain customs, traditions, and dress similar to those of the Arabs. However, their exact origin is not known with certainty.

Question 3. What are some of the things you know about:

(i) the people of Coorg?

Answer:

The people of Coorg are brave, disciplined, and hospitable. They are famous for their martial traditions and have produced many distinguished soldiers. They are also known for their respect towards guests and their deep connection with nature.

Answer:

Coffee is the main crop of Coorg. The coffee plantations are spread across the hills under the shade of evergreen trees. Black pepper and cardamom are also cultivated in the region.

Answer:

Coorg offers several adventure sports and outdoor activities such as trekking, river rafting, rock climbing, mountain biking, canoeing, rappelling, and wildlife watching. These activities attract tourists from different parts of the country.

The forests of Coorg are home to elephants, deer, langurs, squirrels, wild boars, and many species of birds. During river rafting, tourists may also spot kingfishers and other aquatic birds.

Coorg is about 250–260 kilometres from Bengaluru by road. It can be reached by bus, taxi, or private vehicle. The nearest railway stations are Mysuru and Mangaluru, while the nearest airports are located at Bengaluru and Mangaluru.
