Chapter 7. (Poem) The Tale of Custard the Dragon
The Tale of Custard the Dragon is a humorous ballad written by Ogden Nash. The poem tells the story of a little girl named Belinda and her unusual pets—a black kitten, a grey mouse, a yellow dog, and a dragon named Custard. Although everyone calls Custard a coward because he always asks for a safe cage, the real test of courage comes when a pirate suddenly enters the house. Surprisingly, it is Custard who bravely fights the pirate and saves everyone. The poem teaches that true courage is shown through actions, not words.
Poem Summary (English)
The poem begins by introducing Belinda, a little girl who lives in a white house with her four pets—a black kitten named Ink, a grey mouse named Blink, a yellow dog named Mustard, and a dragon named Custard. All the pets, except Custard, believe themselves to be brave and fearless. They often make fun of Custard because he constantly asks for a safe cage, making him appear timid and cowardly.
Ink, Blink, and Mustard proudly boast about their courage and laugh at Custard's fearful nature. Belinda also joins them in teasing the dragon. However, despite being mocked by everyone, Custard remains calm and never argues with them. He quietly accepts their remarks and continues living peacefully.
One day, their peaceful life is suddenly disturbed when a fierce pirate enters the house. The pirate carries pistols in both hands and a shining sword in his mouth. The unexpected danger frightens everyone. Ink climbs to the top of the house, Blink hides in a corner, Mustard runs away, and Belinda cries helplessly.
At that crucial moment, Custard, who had always been called a coward, proves his real bravery. He fearlessly attacks the pirate with great strength and swallows him in a single gulp. By doing so, he saves Belinda and all the other pets from danger. After the pirate is defeated, the others once again begin boasting about their courage as if nothing had happened, while Custard quietly returns to asking for his safe cage.
Through this amusing and entertaining story, Ogden Nash delivers an important message that true courage is revealed in difficult situations. People who boast about their bravery may fail when danger appears, whereas those who appear quiet and fearful may become real heroes through their actions.
Poem Summary (Hindi /
"The Tale of Custard the Dragon" प्रसिद्ध कवि Ogden Nash द्वारा लिखी गई एक हास्यपूर्ण और शिक्षाप्रद कविता है।
