NCERT Textbook Questions & Answers

The following questions are based on the poem For Anne Gregory. Read them carefully to understand the poet's views on physical beauty, inner beauty, and true love.

Thinking About the Poem

Question 1. What does the young man mean by "great honey-coloured / Ramparts at your ear"?

Answer:

The young man refers to Anne Gregory's beautiful golden hair as "great honey-coloured ramparts." He believes that her attractive hair surrounds her face like the walls of a fort and is the main reason why young men admire her. According to him, people are attracted more by her physical beauty than by her inner qualities.

Question 2. What colour is the young woman's hair? What does she say she can change it to? Why would she want to do so?

Answer:

The young woman's hair is honey-coloured or golden. She says that she can dye it black, brown, or any other colour. She wants to do so because she wishes to know whether someone would truly love her for her personality and character rather than for her beautiful hair.

Question 3. Objects have qualities which make them desirable to others. Can you think of some objects and say what qualities make them desirable?

Answer:

Some examples are:

• A flower is admired for its beauty and fragrance.
• A diamond is valued for its brightness and rarity.
• A book is appreciated for its knowledge and ideas.
• A tree is valued for its shade, fruits, and usefulness.
• A mobile phone is desirable because of its useful features and technology.

Question 4. What about people? Do we love others because we like their qualities, whether physical or mental? Or is it possible to love someone "for themselves" alone? Are some people "more lovable" than others? Discuss this question in pairs or in groups, considering points like the following.

Answer:

People may initially be attracted by physical appearance, but true and lasting love is based on inner qualities such as honesty, kindness, sincerity, intelligence, and good character. A person's beauty may fade with time, but noble qualities remain throughout life. Therefore, genuine love means loving someone for who they are rather than for their outward appearance. People who are caring, truthful, humble, and compassionate are often considered more lovable because of their character.
